Emmy nominations 2009: Winners and losers ... 'The Shield,' older dramas left out

The Shield" was the biggest loser, and the most undeserving, in the Emmy nominations announced this morning.

In general, the nominators stayed true to their patterns and trends of recent years. All but one of the best-drama nominees was a cable show, and critical fave "30 Rock" scored its usual fistful of major nominations.

They did recognize the ascent of new blood like Jim Parsons, giving the "Big Bang Theory" star a well-deserved best-actor nomination in the comedy category - though the show itself didn't get nominated.

The ratings success of "The Mentalist" probably earned new face Simon Baker his best-actor nomination, though again, the show itself was shunned.
