Jim Parsons decides to resign as reeve of RM of Swift Current

Rural Municipality of Swift Current Reeve Jim Parsons resigned after 15 years as a public servant.
Parsons was first elected to represent Division 4 in 1994 and in 1999 he was elected as reeve. After he handed in his resignation on June 23, 2009 the remaining council members opted to not elect a new reeve until regular elections in November.

In the mean time, Deputy Reeve Henry Hildebrandt will take over Parson’s duties.
When Divisions 2,4 and 6 elections are held in November a reeve will be elected for a one-year term since the regular reeve election would be held in November 2010.

In recent years, Parson’s name and the RM have inextricably been intertwined with City of Swift Current matters in the media. Most recently, the annexation debate.
Prior to that, the City of Swift Current informing the Rural Water Pipeline Association that water supply would be limited in 2008. In 2006, fire service agreements topped the list.

Parson’s also attempted to organize a meat packing plant. Plans then switched to build an assembly yard, which never came to fruition.

The Prairie Post took some time to catch up with Parsons and discuss his reasons for resigning and thoughts about his time representing the RM of Swift Current ratepayers. Here is a sample of the interview.
