This was the 29 year-old's first stage win ever in his career. Astrarloza began his professional cycling career in 2002, won the 2003 Tour Down Under and placed 9th overall in the 2007 Tour de France. Franco Pellizotti of Liquigas, successfully kept a lead during the stage, staying in front, and ultimately met his goal to gain points in the two category climbs, solidifying his position as King of the Mountains.
Alberto Contador of Astana, still in 1st overall, will wear the yellow jersey for at least another day. Lance Armstrong is second; 1:37 behind Contador and Bradley Wiggins of Garmin-Slipstream is third; 1:46 behind Contador.
Jens Voigt of Saxo Bank suffered a terrible crash during his descent down the Col du Petit-Saint -Bernard and has been admitted to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.
