NHL unveils 2009-10 schedule; Rangers, Islanders both open against Stanley Cup champion Penguins

Welcome to the big league, John Tavares. The Islanders No. 1 overall draft pick, who just signed his contract with the Islanders Wednesday, will make his NHL debut at the Coliseum against none other than Sid (the Kid) Crosby and the defending Stanley Cup champion Penguins on Saturday, Oct. 3.

The Rangers will get their fill of Stanley Cup champion hype. They are the Penguins opponent on Oct. 2, when the Penguins will undoubtedly be unveiling their championship banner, getting championship rings and a lot of other celebrating.

The Rangers open with three games in four nights. The Blueshirts' home-opener is the next night, Oct. 3 against the Senators. They travel across the river to renew their rivalry with the Devils on Oct. 5.

The Devils open Oct. 2 against the Flyers. That night will likely be future Hall of Fame goaltender Martin Brodeur's 1,000th game. He is also likely to break Terry Sawchuk's record of 15 Opening night starts.

After opening with the toughest team in the Eastern Conference, and arguably in the NHL, the Islanders schedule slows down. They have a five-day break before heading out on a two-game road trip to Ottawa and Boston.
