carl pavano

If you thought that the Indians were done trading just because of a measly deadline, think again. The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has completed a trade with the Minnesota Twins, sending RHP Carl Pavano to Minnesota in exchange for a player to be named. The Indians will receive this player on or before September 1. To take Pavano’s spot on the 25-man roster, the Indians have recalled LHP Rafael Perez from AAA Columbus. This means that Pavano was in fact waived within the last three days. He made 21 starts for the Tribe this year going 9-8 with a 5.37 ERA, and managed to stay off of the disabled list. A small feat in and of itself.I would expect Justin Masterson to take Pavano’s spot in the rotation as Perez will then slot in for Masterson. The Twins deepened their rotation today, acquiring Carl Pavano from the Indians for a player to be named later, according to a team press release.

Pavano, 33, has allowed 150 hits in 125.2 innings, posting a respectable 88K/23BB ratio. His base salary is just $1.5MM, but in addition to the $500k remaining on his contract, Pavano stands to earn a lot through incentives. If he makes 10 more starts and averages 6.0 IP per outing, he'll make another $1.75 in bonuses. We heard yesterday that the Indians expect to lose $16MM this year, but they'll receive some relief if the Twins are paying the rest of Pavano's contract.Pavano, who made his major league debut with Montreal in 1998, was an All-Star with Florida in 2004, when he went 18-8 with a 3.00 ERA.

That fall, he signed a four year deal with the Yankees for just under $40 million, but he wound up winning just nine games over the length of that contract, missing the 2006 season with injuries.Pavano signed with the Indians as a free agent in January. On Thursday, Indians owner Larry Dolan said his club is on pace to lose $16 million this season, saying attendance will fall 500,000 short of projections.

Pavano’s incentives began kicking in with his 18th start ($100,000 for No. 18, No. 20 and No. 22). He will make $200,000 for starts No. 24, 26 and 28, then $250,000 for his 30th start and $300,000 for his 32nd start.Pavano has pitched 125 2/3 innings, which would rank him third on the Twins behind Nick Blackburn and Scott Baker. Pavano has given up 150 hits and 23 walks, while notching 88 strikeouts.
