Los Angeles fire spokesman Devin Gales says an unknown number of homes are potentially threatened in the Eagle Rock area near the interchange of State Route 134 and Route 2.A Glendale fire official says voluntary evacuations are under way and there are discussions about making the move mandatory.Helicopters are making water-dropping runs on the blazing slopes of the Verdugo Mountains. Winds are light but temperatures remain in the 90s.Gales says there were three other spot fires in the same general area.
It’ll start a pipeline for new employees, not only for [Glendale Water & Power], but for other utilities,Steiger said of the college’s new Verdugo Power Academy, which will initially train electrical line mechanics, technicians and station electricians.Steiger expected that workers who come out of the initial 16-week program will be able to help with solar panel installation and managing wind turbines, growing needs for the utility and other companies, hesaid.By helping to train workers for jobs that will need to be filled, the academy will become a valuable area asset, Steiger said.We see it as a plus for both [Glendale Water & Power] and the community, he said.College officials had partnered with the utility to develop the program after trustee Tony Tartaglia heard it was having problems finding qualified workers to fill openings.
The success of the college’s Verdugo Fire Academy, a partnership with the Glendale Fire Department, inspired officials to organize another collaborative effort for the power training program, which will not only use the utility’s expertise for instruction, but will give students an opportunity to emerge ready for jobs with starting salaries of up to $60,000, officials said.Administrators hope to build on the establishment of the power academy to develop more training programs through partnerships with area businesses, President/Supt. Dawn Lindsay said. The college is really fostering our relationship with the community so that we are considered the primary resource for training, Lindsay said. The college’s program will begin Sept. 21 and will accept 20 students who will be selected through an application process, said Scott Rubke, chairman of the college’s technology and aviation division. The program is largely funded through stimulus funds allocated for job training and distributed by the Verdugo Workforce Investment Board.
The board awarded its largest training grant — $174,000 — for the academy, and rated it as one of the highest ranking applications for helping to get residents back to work, said Don Nakamoto, a labor market specialist for the board. We know there is a labor shortage, not only in Glendale and Burbank, but in other regions as well, said Nakamoto, later adding, “A training program like this, I think, hasn’t been done in our area and I think it’s very rare.Similar programs do exist, but they have different emphases or move at a slower pace than the academy will, Rubke said. The nearest comparable program is at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, said Rubke. But other programs will not compare with what the academy will provide down the line, including training for smart grid and other energy efficient technology, Steiger said.NORTHEAST GLENDALE — Glendale Community College, in partnership with Glendale Water & Power, will offer a unique career training program starting in September for students hoping to meet an anticipated jump in demand for utility workers, officials announced Monday.
