edgar sawtelle

The Story Of Edgar Sawtelle uses the relationships .sometimes beautifully tender and joyful . between people and dogs to reflect more clearly the relationship between humans. Just as even imperfect communication between humans and dogs requires years of training and practice, the mute Edgar is stymied by his own imperfect understanding of the world and by other people’s inability to grasp what he’s saying. And of course, more generally, everyone fails to communicate or hides what should most be unearthed and shared.Wroblewski uses Shakespearean tragedies throughout, most noticeably Hamlet’s story, as a loose framework, but as Janet Maslin notes,The Story of Edgar Sawtelle is by no means ‘Hamlet with hounds.

This book’s brief encounters with prophecy and the supernatural have as much to do with King’s Maine as they do with Shakespeare’s Denmark. One of the great pleasures of The Story of Edgar Sawtelle is its free-roaming, unhurried progress, enlivened by the author’s inability to write anything but guilelessly captivating prose. One of Mr. Wroblewski’s most impressive accomplishments here is to exert a strong, seemingly effortless gravitational pull. The reader who has no interest in dogs, boys or Oedipal conflicts of the north woods of Wisconsin will nonetheless find these things irresistible. Pick up this book and expect to feel very, very reluctant to put it down.

When Edgar’s father dies without warning a vision appears that leads Edgar on a quest for the killer and he heads for the wilderness with three dogs from the first litter he delivered. For any dog lover out there – this is a fantastic read that weaves a considerable amount of breeding, dog psychology and training information into a murder mystery . Edgar is born without speech, but with sign language communicates to those that love him and choose to listen to him . The narrator of this book changes frequently, including chapters by Edgar’s dog Almondine. This books was a favorite for Oprah,
