Many reports of flooded streets have come into the WLKY newsroom. Viewers should exercise caution when driving in these conditions.WLKY's Andy Alcock reports that there are cars floating on 7th Street near the courthouse in downtown Louisville.A viewer told WLKY the water is approaching homes at 23rd and Dumensil streets and is almost up to the roofs of cars on the street. As I type this, sewage is backing into homes in the south end of Louisville, another viewer said via e-mail. It is gushing up from floor drains in the 1000 block of Ashland Avenue off Taylor Boulevard. The University of Louisville hospital basement is flooded.
High winds and hail are reported from viewers in the Pleasure Ridge Park area. The Shively Police Department reports flooding on nearly every street in that area. Some of the worst of it is on Farnsley, 7th Street and Crums Lane, which is closed. In St. Matthews, there's flooding near the mall area, Interstate 264 near the side of the mall and parts of Shelbyville Road.
Throughout the month of July, WLKY brought you the faces and smiles of area children with the Cutest Kid Contest.
After much debate, a special panel of judges chose a winner: 2-year-old Mallory Banks. She's just very social and fun, said Amy Banks, Mallory's mom. "I think you can see it in her pictures. When you meet little Mallory, it doesn't take long to see why she won the contest. Not long after starting her newsroom tour, she was already serenading our staff. My mom kept saying, 'You know, you need to send in her picture,' and we thought there will be no way she'll ever win, but we'll send in a picture," Amy said. The winning photo was taken on Mallory's second birthday, and Amy said she chose it because it shows off Mallory's personality -- something we saw when we asked her about her hobbies.I like soccer ball, and football, and soccer ball,
she said.Mallory made quite an impression on the newsroom, from carrying on conversations and practicing her own brand of reporting to posing in the control room and grabbing a cookie, passing on her sweetness to one of our engineers and singing for us a little more, something her dad says she learned from watching "Hannah Montana. She could pick up the songs and just started singing them," said Jerome Banks. As for whether she'll carry her tunes into the spotlight, her dad says for now, they're all satisfied with her current title.Just good to have something from TV saying she's the cutest kid," he said. And everyone here at WLKY wants to wish Mallory an early happy birthday. She turns 3 in September.
